Below is an excerpt of a memo from PSCN's Joe Maccolini to the Foundation's Ted Botzum The Patrician Society is a "grassroots" community-based agency founded in 1981 in order to provide services for verifiably needy families and individuals in the greater Norristown area. The agency is an IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation and is registered with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Oganizations. With an annual budget of approximately $70,000, our funding comes primarily from individuals and private foundations. An exception to this regular funding occurred in the past month in that Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals has given a corporate award of $10,000 restricted to the purchase of baby food, formula and disposable diapers.
The award was given with a proviso for a future award pending our matching that amount with other private or corporate money (foundations not included). The Patrician Society serves families and individuals who can prove an existing financial need. Services include the operation of the largest emergency food center in Montgomery County with ancillary provisions such as the aformentioned baby items, occasional household items, furniture and clothing. Because of space limitations (we use the basement of the former Saint Patrick School building at Chestnut and Green Streets), our primary area of interest is food. We solicit mostly nonperishable foods(including "one-dish meals" such as canned macaroni, soups, stews, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jelly and tuna) but we are open to any donations which come our way.
The Patrician Society also conducts a summer day camp for children ages5-11. We recently completed our 22nd season providing a well-rounded recreational nd educational experience for neighborhood boys and girls. We have space for 40 kids in each of 6 one-week sessions. The camp charges $25 per child or a weekly session. The cost to the Patrician Society is approximately $100 per child, thus we solicit funding in order to provide this program for worthy children.
Any funding which would be provided by the Mike Petrone Foundation would be used in one or more of the programs described above as per your direction.
